Unit one, Life Science

Variables- The changeable factors that could influence an expriment's outcome.

Control- The sample in an expirment in which the variables are kept at a base level.

Sexual reproduction- Reproduction that involves two and in which the offspring have characteristics of both  parents.

Asexual reproduction- reproduction that involves only one parent in which the offspring is identical to the parent.

Stimulus- Anything that affects the activity of an organism.

Homeostasis- To maintain a stable internal enviornment.

Cell- The basic unit structure of all living things- th smallest unit in  which life processes can be carried out.

Cellular respiration- the breaking down of food molecules by cells into usable energy.

Diffusion- The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

Osmosis- the diffusion of water through a membrane.

Mitosis- The cell division process in which each daughter cell receives an identicle copy of the parents chromosomes.

Meiosis- The cell division process in which new cells with half the number of  the usual number are produced.

Taxonomy- The scientific classification of organisms.

Species- A group of organisms that can mate with one another and produce fertile offspring.

Unit Two, Viruses, Bacteria,Protoctists, and Fungi

Virus- a tiny particle that contains Nucleic acid encased in protein.

Bacteriophage- A virus that infects Bacteria.

Retrovirus- A virus that carries genetic material in the form of RNA.

Binary fission- Cell division in which one cell splits into two identical daughter cells. each having a complete set of DNA.

Budding- Asexual reproduction in which a small part of the parent develops into an independent organism.

Autotrophs- Organisms that can make their own food from simple substances.

Heterotrophs- Organisms that can't make their own food.

Pathogen- Disease causing microorganisms.

Photosynthesis- The process in which plants use energy the sun to make their own food.

Chlorophyll- the green pigment that captures light energy for photosynthesis.
